Fr. Wayne Cavalier, O.P.

Wayne A. Cavalier, O.P., Ph.D. is an ordained Dominican friar (Southern Province), and founding Director of the Congar Institute for Ministry Development. The Congar Institute fosters collaboration among providers of ministry formation to help make excellent lay ecclesial ministry formation resources available to under-served dioceses. Its main effort is the collaborative project, "Developing Lay Ecclesial Ministry for the U.S. Missions" with the Home Missions Leadership Conference.

Wayne grew up in rural Louisiana and gained much experience in a variety of lay leadership positions on both the parish and diocesan levels and in Catholic education. He served on the Core Team developing the Lay Ministry Formation Program in the Houma-Thibodaux Diocese (Louisiana) in the early 1980s. Summers at Catholic University earned Wayne an M.R.E. in 1985; then entering the Dominicans he earned his M.A. (ecclesiology) and M.Div. (Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology, Berkeley, CA, 1990), and learned Spanish. His ministerial internships included community organizing with rural Hispanic ranch workers for two years.

Following studies, Wayne teamed with Glenmary's Department of Pastoral Services as Resource Person for Ministry Development in rural Glenmary parishes from 1991 to 1993. He was then ordained a priest and accepted a position on the Provincial Leadership Team for his religious congregation, the Dominicans, for five years.

In 2005, he completed studies for a Ph.D. in theology and education at Boston College. His dissertation focused on lay ecclesial ministry formation. He has published several articles and given major presentations on lay ministry formation.

Wayne is a member of the Home Mission Network of the National Association for Lay Ministry (NALM) and has convened their study group on using technology for ministry formation in rural dioceses. Formerly, as Co-Chair of NALM's Programs and Services Committee, which did consultations on lay ministry in home mission dioceses, Wayne served on the consulting team for Jackson, MS. He also served on the Implementation Committee for Co-Workers in the Vineyard of the Lord.

Through his work with the Congar Institute, Wayne has developed various resources in English and Spanish to assist in providing excellent formation for lay ecclesial ministers and pastoral planning in the following dioceses: Jackson, MS; Dallas, TX; Grand Island, NE; Salt Lake City, UT; Beaumont, TX; Fort Worth, TX; and Orlando, FL. He is also working in collaboration with the University of Notre Dame to create online ministry formation resources in English and Spanish. Wayne teaches as an adjunct in Barry University's D.Min. Program (Miami, FL), as a visiting professor at the Rice School for Ministry in the Diocese of Venice in Florida, at Oblate School of Theology (San Antonio, TX), and in the Pastoral Institute at the University of the Incarnate Word (San Antonio, TX).

Wayne represents his Dominican Province at the Home Missions Leadership Conference.
