Hey there, I hope this email finds you well and enjoying some relief from the scorching summer heat. Coming back to three-digit temperatures in San Antonio after some time off in Oregon reminded me of opening a hot oven on one of those rare times when I’ve cooked! Oregon was just beautiful, and I couldn't wait to share all the incredible experiences with you. One of the meaningful parts of this trip was reconnecting with a place that holds special significance for me. Almost 30 years ago, I attended seminary in California and visited Oregon to see a play that was part of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland. Those days out West were pivotal in my path to becoming a Dominican priest and simultaneously my discernment of a vocation within that vocation in support of lay ministry in the Church. Of course, I could not help but immerse myself in Oregon's natural beauty. Hiking through its picturesque and sometimes exotic landscapes was nothing short of magical. The serene forests, the immense and ancient redwoods, the invigorating mountain air, the lunar-like volcanic sites, and the sense of tranquility that enveloped me – it was as if the very essence of Oregon's natural beauty was inviting me to lose myself in its embrace once more. I revisited the Shakespeare Festival in Ashland, which was a delight. The outdoor theater resembles the classic Elizabethan style that Shakespeare used to present his remarkable works. I had the incredible opportunity to immerse myself in the world of drama, comedy, and music while watching captivating performances of Rent, the Three Musketeers, and others. The way each play seamlessly intertwined with important current social issues was genuinely remarkable—a reminder to me of the enduring power of storytelling to reflect and inspire change. I also visited the awe-inspiring Newberry National Volcanic Monument near Bend, Oregon. Standing amidst the remnants of ancient eruptions was an incredibly humbling experience. The sheer force of nature's creativity and power was palpable, leaving me profoundly connected to the Earth. This vacation has been a perfect mix of breathtaking sights, culture, exploration, and those unforgettable "pinch me" moments. I wish I could've brought you along to share these memories firsthand. However, I'm here, bursting with stories and photos I could not wait to show you. Sending you all the joy and cool weather vibes I brought back from my Oregon adventure. Stay refreshed and keep in touch! Warmly, |
